| Brandy - Afrodisiac Album Review: Afrodisiac is a touching glimpse into the soul of a woman who has experienced and overcome a great deal of turmoil; a lifelike blending of sadness and happiness, softness and edginess. There was still some of the busyness that detracted from Full Moon, but this album is nevertheless a significant improvement. Brandy this time shows even more conviction and believable emotion. I'd have liked to hear the vocals more 'unplugged.' While Brandy did do a very good job on vocals, the heavy use of layering tended to take focus away from them. Still, Brandy's got a very sweet, soft voice that makes for some very pretty ballads. That's not to say it's all soft; there are some sassy numbers, too. Brandy's performance on this album is not only skillful, but also personal, genuine, and beautiful; although I miss the vocal clarity that made Never Say Never my all-time favourite. | Lil Wayne - Tha Carter On his fourth solo record, THA CARTER, Wayne is almost wholly on his own. There are no big-name guest stars (as with Petey Pablo's memorable turn on Wayne's previous album), only recurring shots from producer Mannie Fresh and Cash Money head Bryan "Baby" Williams. Lil' Wayne's easy flow speaks for itself; in a relaxed Southern manner, he waits for the rhyme to unfold before unleashing a torrent of lyrical lines, with consistent, understated beats pulling the tracks along. | Gretchen Wilson - here for the party Album Notes: In the tradition of singers such as Wanda Jackson and Tanya Tucker comes Gretchen Wilson, a self-proclaimed hard-living trailer-park inhabitant with country-rock attitude to spare. The pleasant surprise with Wilson is that, in stark contrast to the streamlined country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill, she doesn't mind getting a bit dirty (musically or otherwise). Though her grassroots ethos clearly plays into her success, it's not a pose: Wilson means what she says, and her country twang, mixed with roots and mainstream rock, packs a punch. HERE FOR THE PARTY alternates between songs about rural, working-class nightlife (particularly Wilson's love of cowboys, whiskey, and, of course, country music) and its trials and tribulations (romantic heartache and spiritual struggle). . |

| Dave Matthews Band - The gorge THE GORGE stands out from the pack due to its unique recording environment. The outdoor venue in question is carved out of the basalt cliffs adjacent to Oregon's Columbia River Gorge, a canyon in the Cascade mountain range. The space is renowned both for its scenic splendor and natural acoustic properties. As such, the sound quality here is warmer and clearer than a typical concert recording, and the ensemble seems inspired to deliver a top-notch performance. As on the group's other live outings, several tracks here are much longer than their studio counterparts. Particular beneficiaries of this treatment include the baritone sax-driven rocker "Two Step" and the funky world-beat exploration "Lie in Our Graves." | Avril Lavigne - Under my skin This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Album Review: While Avril Lavigne's 2002 debut, LET GO, arrived amidst a tidal wave of teen female performers, the 17-year-old Canadian singer/songwriter managed to distinguish herself with a punk-rock attitude tempered by a hooky pop sensibility. Lavigne's sound reached a remarkably wide audience, even inspiring indie-rock icon Liz Phair to openly pattern her next record after it. With her 2004 follow-up, UNDER MY SKIN, Lavigne makes it clear which side of the pop-rock precipice she's standing on. Instead of pop producers such as the Matrix, Lavigne aligns herself with Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida and Linkin Park producer Don Gilmore. The result is a much more complex record--an angst-ridden, soul-searching album that rocks with fury without losing a keen ear for melody. This is clear from the outset with the brooding, lushly orchestrated, guitar-driven opening track "Take Me Away." However, while the music has significantly matured, Lavigne's lyrics still possess the same sense of teenage confusion and frustration so charming on her debut. UNDER MY SKIN is an impressive step for the young songwriter, and it effectively transcends the teen-pop label she inevitably received with her first record. |
